WordPress is Celebrating its 10th Anniversary, Happy Birthday!
It all started 10 years ago, on 27th of May 2003, when the first release of WordPress was launched. Probably Matt Mullenweg (the founder of WordPress) didn’t imagine that its open source software will become the world’s most popular Content Management System, powering more than 60 million websites and 22% of all new websites from US.
Since then, Matt and the whole community of hundreds of volunteers launched around 80 releases of WordPress and its latest version 3.5 has been downloaded around 21 million times. Impressive, isn’t it? You can view some other great figures in our infographic about WordPress.
So, what are you doing on May 27, 2013? Did you save the date, will you celebrate the WordPress 10th anniversary? Thousands of WordPress enthusiasts will certainly do.
WordPress encourages its fans all over the world to celebrate its anniversary and will set up a new website to collect and share photos, videos, posts, tweets from all the parties. The rules are quite simple, have a look:
- Choose a place in your city to meet with other enthusiasts – a bar, a park, a backyard, etc.
- Let other users know about your party, spread the word on social media, groups, blogs, press, etc.
- If you’ll have more than 50 attendees to your party, WordPress will try to send you some stickers and buttons
- Post your photos, videos, share your activity on #wp10 hashtag
All the parties are coordinated through Meetup, where a dedicated page was created. Simply start a new meetup group or join to existing communities from your city. At this moment, there are already 605 communities created and 4,045 participants from 555 different cities.
Additionally, in honor of its celebration WordPress offers a special anniversary T-shirt. You can get a silver or black T-shirt at a discounted price of $10 + shipping. Hurry up you still have time to benefit from this great offer, you can buy them here.
We all are proud to be a part of WordPress community and hope to hear more great things from it the next 10 years. Happy celebration to everyone!
